Product quality & storage
Why can one batch of honey look or taste different from another?
Honey reflects the nectar sources available to the bees. Bloom timing, rainfall, temperature, and surrounding forage can all influence color, aroma, and flavor, so natural seasonal variation is expected.
Why does honey turn grainy or firm?
Honey can naturally crystallize as some of its sugars form crystals. That change in texture is a normal characteristic of honey.
How should I store honey?
Keep the container tightly sealed at normal room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture.
How long does honey keep?
Properly stored honey can keep for a long time, though flavor and texture may change. Purdue Extension recommends using stored honey within two years for quality. Follow any date on your product label.
Does crystallization mean honey has gone bad?
No. Crystallization is a normal physical change in honey. The speed and texture of crystallization vary with the honey’s natural sugar profile and storage temperature.
Can crystallized honey become liquid again?
Yes. Place a suitable glass jar in warm water and stir gently as the crystals dissolve. Keep water out of the honey.
Can babies have honey?
Do not give honey to children younger than one year.
Is the honey raw, unfiltered, or pasteurized?
We have not published a product-specific claim about raw or unfiltered status, pasteurization, pollen content, or laboratory testing. Contact us if you need details about a particular honey or batch.
Do the honey varieties contain allergens?
Ingredients can differ by variety. Please check the product label and contact us with ingredient or allergy questions before purchasing; we have not published a full allergen statement online.
Our farm & harvest
Where is J&S Golden Harvest Farms?
We’re Slade and Jody Lindquist, growing our farm in Tonganoxie, Kansas. Get to know the people behind J&S.
What flowers or forage does the honey come from?
Forage changes with local blooms and the season. We do not describe each batch as a single-flower honey unless that information is confirmed for the product.
How do your beekeeping practices support colony health?
Our approach puts colony health first and considers hive strength, forage, weather, season, and winter stores before harvest. Read more on the Beekeeping page.
What happens between the hive and the bottle?
See the From Hive to Jar harvest section for our overview of colony care, harvesting, extraction, settling, and bottling.
How is the honey processed?
Our harvest overview describes removing cappings, extracting honey from the comb, straining, settling, and bottling. We have not published claims about pasteurization, pollen content, or laboratory testing; contact us if you have a specific product question.
